82-Year-Old American Transforms 2003 Mercedes Sprinter into Permanent Home
Tom, an 82-year-old American, has made a 2003 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter his permanent home, rejecting traditional housing for life on the road. He completely rebuilt the van’s interior to include a kitchen, shower, and sleeping area, powered by solar panels and a custom electrical system.
Tom, an 82-year-old American resident, has converted a 2003 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter T1N into his full-time residence, opting for life on the road over conventional housing. The vehicle, which appears externally as a standard gray utility van, conceals a fully functional living space designed and built entirely by Tom himself.
The conversion began with a long-wheelbase Sprinter T1N featuring a 157-inch wheelbase and high roof. Originally configured as a passenger minibus, the exterior retains a discreet appearance, marked only by a side awning and two rooftop solar panels totaling approximately 400 watts of capacity.
Inside, Tom removed the partition separating the driver’s cabin from the rear cargo area to create an open-plan layout. This modification facilitates easy movement throughout the vehicle, a design choice he noted is particularly practical for aging in place. The front seats are mounted on swivel bases, allowing them to rotate backward to form two armchairs around a fixed rotating table.
A long sofa along the left wall serves three functions: a daytime seating area, a night bed via a jackknife mechanism that unfolds in seconds, and extensive under-seat storage. Part of the vehicle’s 24-volt electrical system is housed within this unit to preserve living space.
Opposite the sofa, Tom installed a custom L-shaped countertop extending nearly 3.6 meters toward the rear. This unit integrates a single induction cooktop, sink, multicooker, and refrigerator. A custom-built cabinet within the counter houses a composting toilet.
Water management relies on a home-built filtration system inspired by Berkey filters, using a BPA-free jug connected to the tank via a pump. For hygiene, Tom constructed a removable shower using a folding dog tub, a pump, and a showerhead linked to the water circuit, concealed by a curtain installed in the center of the van.
Power is supplied by the rooftop solar panels, which charge a custom-made 230-amp-hour battery bank. The system includes a 3,000-watt inverter and an MPPT charge controller, enabling off-grid operation without reliance on campgrounds.
At the rear, behind a partition, Tom created a vertical storage garage approximately 38 inches deep, accessible through rear doors. This space holds tools, cables, and a telescopic ladder, keeping the main cabin uncluttered.
Tom purchased the Sprinter in 2019 for approximately $8,200 (€7,500) and invested an additional $8,000 (€7,350) in renovations. The total cost of the mobile home is roughly $16,200 (€14,900). He has lived in the van for several years, describing it as a warm, ultra-functional apartment that eliminates the need for a traditional house.
