Matthew Wright, a producer for The Ellen DeGeneres Show, died from cardiopulmonary arrest in Los Angeles on October 30, according to a death certificate obtained by PEOPLE. Hypertension was listed as the underlying cause of death, while obstructive sleep apnea and Class II obesity were identified as contributing conditions.
Wright passed away "suddenly but peacefully in his sleep," according to a GoFundMe page established to support his family. The campaign notes that Wright and his husband, Justin, were both laid off over the summer, compounding the financial burden of transporting Wright’s body back to New York and covering funeral expenses.
Colleagues from the show have responded with donations and tributes. Ellen DeGeneres donated $5,000 and posted an emotional tribute to Wright on social media. Andy Lassner, the executive producer of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, also contributed to the fund. Lassner noted that he had visited the set of The Jennifer Hudson Show just hours before learning of Wright's death.
The family has described the loss as an "unfathomable tragedy" and is struggling with the costs associated with the memorial service in Los Angeles.
