Kapsch TrafficCom Supports Southern California Growth with San Bernardino Express Lanes Contract
Key mobility solution addresses regional growth as San Bernardino prepares for half a million new residents in the next quarter century
The 8-mile extension merges with neighboring Riverside County system for seamless 53-mile express lane network
Smart technology to give I-15 drivers a new, reliable choice to bypass daily traffic congestion
DULUTH, GA / ACCESS Newswire / May 6, 2026 / As San Bernardino County prepares for an influx of half a million new residents in 25 years, Kapsch TrafficCom will support regional growth by expanding the SB Express Lanes network.
Awarded by the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA), the contract focuses on relocating and integrating tolling equipment owned by the Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC) to ensure system continuity as the region's express lanes network expands.
"This extension strengthens regional mobility for all travelers," said Philip Chu, Deputy Director of Express Lanes at SBCTA. "Kapsch's work relocating RCTC's tolling equipment supports our broader effort to create a seamless express lanes experience across county lines. As our population grows, enhancing the reliability of our transportation network is essential for residents and commuters alike."
The expansion addresses a critical need for the region. With an estimated 370,000 more vehicles expected on county roads in the coming years, the SB Express Lanes are a key strategy to improve traffic flow for everyone. The express lane system on I-15 offers drivers the choice of a faster, more predictable trip, saving valuable time and reducing daily travel frustrations.
"San Bernardino County is one of the fastest-growing regions in the country, and that growth demands innovative mobility solutions," said JB Kendrick, President of Kapsch TrafficCom North America. "We are proud to partner with SBCTA to help manage congestion and improve the daily drive for the 4.6 million residents in these two counties. This project is about using smart technology to make travel safer, more reliable, and ready for the future."
This section of I-15 is equipped with a full suite of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technology, including toll traffic monitoring systems, closed circuit TV cameras, variable toll message signs, changeable message signs, and communications network.
The contract reflects SBCTA's confidence in Kapsch TrafficCom's proven expertise and reliability in ITS technology. Toll revenue generated from the new segment will be shared between San Bernardino and Riverside County, reinforcing regional collaboration and investment in smart mobility solutions.
