Trump names Stephen Miller as White House chief of staff after midterm losses
US President Donald Trump has appointed senior adviser Stephen Miller as White House chief of staff, replacing Susie Wiles days after Republicans lost control of Congress.
Trump said Miller, 41, would begin on Monday and described him as a trusted adviser and strong manager. Wiles, 69, the first woman to hold the post, said serving in the administration had been an honour and that she would continue to support the president’s agenda.
Miller has been a central architect of the administration’s immigration policies and has worked with Trump since his first presidential campaign. His promotion places one of the White House’s most influential policy figures in charge of staff operations during a politically difficult period.
Leading Democrats condemned the decision, citing Miller’s role in immigration enforcement. Miller said the administration’s mission was to support Trump and defend the country.
